I pride myself on my integrity, I’ve never tried to push a client in a direction because it would have been good for my or my employer (a few times to the chagrin of my then employer). I always push my clients to the solution that best solves their problems, not mine.
That being said: I was recently passively accused of going behind someone’s back in trying to obtain a meeting. Thankfully, it was quickly resolved but for at least a few minutes, when my integrity was in question, I was in shock and questioning from where the accusation may have come.
It all stemmed from a simple misunderstanding, an errant email that was sent at the before a formal client relationship began. For lack of better term (and all due respect to William Shakespeare) it was a comedy of errors.
But the truth of the matter is, we work in an industry that has (what I think is) an ill-gotten reputation of being duplicitous or even purposefully deceitful. We’re caught in the middle of the stigma and the reality. In my career, I’ve never been purposefully deceitful, in fact I’ve been known to wear my heart on my sleeve, and I believe it’s worked in my favour most of the time.
